All
'Mussels!'
I was barely twelve months old when one
morning, completely out of character, 'they' got us up very early. Something
was very different, the time was all wrong and breakfast was very early
- not that we complained.
My older 'sister' and me, as with all
borders, can detect anything out of the ordinary and we invariably get
a little excited at the prospect of something different.
Before long we were escorted to the 'car'
which normally meant a trip out to the country and a good long walk
- great stuff.
On this occasion we seemed to be somewhat
restricted by the jumble of bags and boxes that had been placed in every
available space in the vehicle. My older sister didn't seem too disturbed
by these events and tried to explain to me that it looked like a "holiday"
trip and that it was something that I should look forward to. How right
my elder was.
After what seemed like days we arrived
and were escorted into this strange little 'box' home on wheels - comfortable
but small. It turned out to be what 'they ' refer to as a caravan or
mobile home.
What can I say about the days that followed.
Well there was all this soft , pale,
gritty earth everywhere and a huge moving puddle along one of it's edges.
The earth was hopeless for digging in as no sooner had I dug a hole
it seemed to fill in. And the puddle was the worst I'd ever drunk from.
However there were some strange looking
stones lying around on this sandy coloured earth, very blue in colour
and quite thin. Good crunching material!. The first time I decided to
pick one up and began to chew it I got some verbal from 'them', so I
ran off to a safer distance and demolished it in peace.- it turned out
to be a mussel shell - and very tasty too.
As the week wore on they gave up chasing
me to remove these tasty morsels from my mouth. They knew full well
that chasing only encouraged me to seek out more.
It's funny how one's taste changes, the
next holiday I didn't really fancy 'crunchy' stuff. Salty seaweed is
much better!!!!
I wonder what 'goodies' I'll find on
my next trip to the seaside.
